From Milk to Butter

The Butter Science Challenge

Can your pupils turn cream into butter — and work out why it happens?

A hands-on KS1 & KS2 science workshop | 45–60 minutes

Forget watching a demonstration. The children make the butter themselves.

In this engaging, practical workshop, pupils become Butter Scientists, investigating what happens when cream is churned and using their observations to explain how butter forms.

🔬 A science investigation disguised as a delicious challenge

Each group becomes a mini “Butter Factory”.

Pupils must predict, observe, measure, record, discuss and explain what happens as the cream changes.

🧈 What happens during the workshop?

1. THE IMPOSSIBLE CHALLENGE

How could we turn liquid cream into solid butter?

2. FROM FARM TO FACTORY

Follow the journey from cow → milk → cream → churning → butter → packaging → shop, introducing food production, dairy farming and processing.

3. PREDICT THE SCIENCE

What is the difference between milk, cream and butter? What role does fat play?

4. THE BUTTER FACTORY

Teams churn their own cream and discuss changes.

They observe the transformation from liquid cream → thicker cream → whipped cream → grainy mixture → butter + liquid.

5. THE BIG REVEAL

Once the butter forms, pupils separate the butter from the buttermilk and investigate where the liquid came from.

6. TASTE & TEST – Finish by tasting the butter they have made.

🧠 What are pupils learning?

The workshop develops pupils’ understanding of:

Materials and their properties

Solids and liquids

Changes that occur during practical processes

Fat and its role in food

Observation and measurement

Scientific vocabulary and explanation

Prediction and drawing conclusions

Fair testing and comparative enquiry

Recording and interpreting results

Food production from farm to consumer

They don’t just learn how butter is made.
They make it, investigate it and explain the science behind it.

From cream to butter – one jar, one challenge, one unforgettable science investigation.
