Did you
know that Shire Horses used to carry Knights into battle? Or
that a Shire Horse can pull up to twice its own body weight?
The
Shire Horses on show here at Sacrewell are kindly on loan from
The Waldburg Shires.
The
number of Shire Horses we have on site at any one time does vary
but we generally have a least two horses on show, giving you the
rare opportunity to get up close to these magnificent animals.
At
weekends during the main Easter and Summer season, the Waldburg
Shires often run dray rides for our visitors to enjoy for which
a small additional charge applies.
The
Shire Horses also take centre stage at our annual Country Life
and Shire Horse Show in September. In our Ploughing Through the
Ages event in November they will demonstrate why they were so
valuable to farmers.
There
is also a chance that you may be able to see these lovely
animals being groomed along with harnessing and plaiting
demonstrations.
The
Waldburg Shire Horses often parade in many public events which
include pulling the Lord Mayor’s Gold Coach in London
(pictured). They even had a small cameo appearance in the 2011
film War Horse. You can even hire the Shire Horses to pull an
elegant carriage at your wedding if you wish. |
