Riverford and Sacrewell Farm
In 2007 Riverford moved on to Sacrewell Farm and began the process of converting the land to organic to grow vegetables for their organic box scheme. www.riverfordsacrewell.co.uk. 2009 saw the first organic crops harvested by Riverford on Sacrewell farm.
In order to balance the demands on the land and meet the needs of the box they grow a really diverse crop range from strawberries and apples to wet garlic and wheat. The cereals are sold to a local organic beef farmer and in return they take the well needed muck from his cows to put on the land.
Riverford leave about 40 acres of land unproductive – partly to support nesting lap wings that have colonised the farm in the last 12 months and also to help regenerate indigenous lime stone grassland that was once common in the area. They have also put up bird and bat boxes throughout the wooded area of the farm and have increased the width of most of their field margins. Visitors will see that farming and wildlife can comfortably co-exist.
Visitors to Sacrewell have the opportunity to look around the farm and learn more about the wide range of organic crops grown. For Riverford it is a great opportunity to keep closely connected with the local community – and hopefully find a few new customers in the process! Please ask at Reception for more details.
